The specifications of LED screens: What You Must Check Before Buying an LED Display
Before purchasing an LED display, understanding the technical specifications is essential to ensure image quality, reliability and long-term performance.
When evaluating an LED display, make sure the specification sheet includes the following key parameters:
1. Core Specifications Required in Every LED Display Data Sheet
A professional LED screen technical sheet must include, at minimum, the following details:
- Graphic Resolution – Total pixel count (horizontal × vertical). Defines how detailed your content will appear.
- Physical Pixel Pitch – The distance between adjacent RGB pixels (in mm). The smaller the pitch, the higher the definition. It determines resolution and viewing distance.
- Pixel Density – Number of pixels per square meter, essential for comparing sharpness across LED technologies.
- LED Type – SMD, COB, IMD, MIP, COG or DIP. Each offers different performance in brightness, contrast, durability, price, and impact resistance.
- Brightness – Measured in NIT (cd/m²). Indoor screens require 600–1500 NIT, outdoor 4000–10,000 NIT. eIt is essential for indoor vs outdoor visibility.
- IP Protection Rating – Outdoor LED walls should have IP65–IP68 for waterproof and dustproof protection.
- Viewing Angle – Determines visibility from different positions (horizontal and vertical).
- Total Weight – Important for façade installation, shop windows, and lightweight structures.
- Power Consumption – Maximum and average consumption, required for electrical planning and TCO evaluation. It impacts operating costs.

2. Additional Essential Specifications for Performance & Compliance
Beyond basics, a professional LED screen specification sheet should also include:
Maintenance Access
- Front service – for walls or windows without rear access.
- Rear service – for open spaces or technical rooms.
Operating Temperature
Standard ranges:
- Outdoor: –20°C to +55°C
- Indoor: 0°C to +40°C
Humidity Range
Typically 10% to 99% depending on protection.
Refresh Rate
At least 1920 Hz, ideally 3840 Hz or higher for TV studios, XR/VR, and video shooting.
Contrast Ratio
Higher contrast improves image readability, especially in high ambient light.
Color Depth & Processing
16-bit processing = 281 trillion colors for excellent gradients and smooth visuals.
Color Temperature Range
Adjustable (typically 5000K–9500K) for accurate reproduction across environments.

3. Character Matrix — The Most Overlooked but Critical Specification
The character matrix defines:
- Minimum readable character height
- Maximum number of text lines
- Maximum characters per line
If ignored, text may become unreadable from real viewing distance. This is especially critical for public information displays, transport hubs, road signage, and retail messaging.
4. Electronics, Inputs/Outputs & Control Systems
A reliable LED screen must clearly specify the electronic components and signal management system:
- Receiving card brand/model (NovaStar, MacroPix, Colorlight, Brompton, etc.)
- Driver IC brand — vital for smooth dimming, refresh rate, grayscale performance
- LED brand and binning — affects lifespan, color stability and uniformity
- Power supply brand (MeanWell or certified equivalents)
- Video inputs — HDMI, DP, SDI, CVBS, streaming inputs
- Control system compatibility — cloud CMS, embedded media players, remote brightness control
These elements heavily influence the reliability, durability and visual stability of the final installation.
5. Certifications & Quality Assurance
Every professional LED display must include proper certifications:
- EMC Certification (Class A or B)
- Electrical Safety (LVD)
- IP Protection Tests
- UL94/5VB flammability standards
- ISO9001 production quality
- Energy efficiency & carbon footprint reports
Important: Certifications must come from independent accredited laboratories, not self-issued documents.
