A profoundly existential and human exhibition, from 24 June to 25 July in the heart of the city of Athens. A production by the Onassis Foundation with the kind support of the Attica Region. The “You and AI” festival takes place within the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab network and is co-funded by the “Creative Europe” program of the European Union.

You and AI: Through the Algorithmic Lens is a three-week festival by Onassis Stegi, featuring an exhibition in a public space, which explores how and by whom algorithmic systems are built and defined and how they can influence and reshape society and ours. perception of the world.

The festival focuses on a physical exhibition at the Pedion tou Areos park in Athens; an important site from a historical, political, social and environmental point of view, a public space for aggregation and entertainment, but also a barometer of socio-economic changes. With a program that includes online experiences, live events and debates, You & AI aims to start the much-needed conversation about an increasingly technological society and the challenges of wide adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), algorithmic systems and decision-making processes of machines in everyday life.

The exhibition examines three themes that correspond to the three paths of the exhibition:

1. Artificial intelligence as a determining factor in shaping the public space, the political process and modern democracy.
2. The way we see artificial intelligence and the way it sees us.

3. Artificial intelligence as part of and as a substitute for the natural environment. There is a parallel theme that focuses on the fact that artificial intelligence is an opportunity to talk about our identity, as a human species, as individuals and as citizens.

The algorithm, as it appears now in our daily lives, is an opportunity to talk about our identity, as a human species, because in addition to an exhibition on artificial intelligence, “You and AI” is also a profoundly existential and human reportage.

At the same time, in the same existential research, the exhibition focuses on the popular protagonist of Greek musical culture, George Mazonakis, whose dynamic, unclassified and ever-changing data provokes the deregulation of the algorithm. The comedy “Exit” by Manolis Manousakis and Aphrodite Panagiotakou is the life of George Mazonakis, but potentially the life of each of us: a countdown to the release, given in a cloud of fragments of sound and reflection, of how it is born, where he grew up, of his relationship with God and death, of his home, of his own people, his audience, whose jaws correspond to the mirror surfaces that surround the viewer in the space of the installation.

The exhibition is structured in such a way that the visitor encounters the works through a carefully curated “chance encounter” process, as the exhibits, mainly large high-resolution screens, 3D sculptures and installations, emerge through the vegetation of the field, accompanied by a soundscape that is activated when the viewer / listener approaches specific points. The natural and the artificial, the familiar and the unfamiliar, the digital and the material, the casual and the pre-designed enter into a dialogue that expresses exactly the experience that artificial intelligence has brought into our lives.

Pedion tou Areos welcomes artificial intelligence as a park, something natural but also artificial together, something that has materiality but is also a social construction, something that lives as a community of people and as a public space. Artificial intelligence, mainly technological expression, is our new natural environment, constantly mediates the digital public space through social networks, but also the natural public space through navigation, sorting, accommodation and traffic applications and lives off the digital tracks that people leave when they move around the city, when they work, when they talk, even when they fall in love. mainly large high-resolution screens, 3D sculptures and installations emerge through the vegetation of the field, accompanied by a soundscape that activates when the viewer / listener approaches specific points. Pedion tou Areos is the heart of the new Athens, the Athens of multiculturalism, communities and diversity, but also of the public space that we rediscover, of the meeting of young people with old inhabitants, of the digital with the material, of the public with the private, artificial intelligence with each of us. From the statue of Constantine to the “Gardenia”, from the Via dell’Acqua to Piazza Economides, “You and AI” speaks of the place, the place and all of us.
