At Catania Airport, Macropix delivered a large-format LED installation designed to provide strong content visibility in a spacious environment characterized by continuous passenger traffic.
The project features a double-sided LED display, developed across 90-degree corner surfaces, with approximately 30 m² of LED surface for each corner. The installation uses a 3.9 mm pixel pitch and delivers a brightness of 1,200 nits, helping digital content remain clearly visible even in the highly illuminated environment of an airport terminal.
The system is based on the Mobilis product family, a modular LED solution supporting several pixel pitches, including 3.9 mm, as well as creative configurations such as right-angle installations.
Installation benefits
In an airport environment, visual communication must be immediate, highly recognizable and visible from multiple directions. The double-sided configuration enables the LED display to reach passengers approaching from different areas of the terminal, significantly increasing content exposure compared with a conventional screen facing only one direction.
The 90-degree installation also makes effective use of the existing architecture, transforming otherwise static structural surfaces into high-impact digital communication areas. The Mobilis system is specifically designed to support modular configurations and creative shapes, including right-angle installations.
The 3.9 mm pixel pitch provides an appropriate level of image definition for the typical viewing distances found inside an airport terminal, while the 1,200-nit brightness specified for this project improves readability under strong ambient and artificial lighting.
For the customer, the installation provides several practical advantages:
- greater content visibility from multiple areas of the terminal;
- fast and flexible updating of advertising, information and communication content;
- more efficient use of available architectural surfaces;
- strong visual impact in a high-traffic environment;
- a modular system that facilitates future servicing and upgrades.
Airports and other transportation hubs are also specifically listed among the intended application environments for Mobilis.
Product used
The project uses Macropix Mobilis, a modular LED platform developed for both large-scale displays anallations requiring unconventional shapes or configurations.
The cabinets are manufactured from die-cast aluminium and have a depth of only 40 mm, allowing large LED surfaces to maintain a relatively slim profile. Different cabinet sizes can be combined, making it easier to adapt the display to the dimensions and geometry of the installation area.
One of the main advantages of Mobilis is its flexibility. Different panel sizes can be joined together according to the requirements of the installation, enabling customized shapes and layouts. The system supports 90-degree corners as well as concave, convex and other creative configurations.
The product has also been engineered to simplify installation and servicing. The brochure highlights its highly integrated design, concealed cabling and the possibility of performing maintenance from both the front and rear of the display.
For the 3.9 mm version, the technical specifications also indicate a refresh rate of at least 3,840 Hz, a 5,000:1 contrast ratio and wide viewing angles, helping produce stable, high-contrast images that remain clearly visible even when the screen is viewed from the side.
