In Newcastle, Macropix delivered an outdoor LED installation for roadside communication, designed to ensure strong content visibility even in demanding ambient light conditions.
The display features outdoor SMD technology with a 6.6 mm pixel pitch and measures 5.76 × 2.88 metres, providing an overall resolution of 872 × 436 pixels. With a brightness of 6,000 nits, images, videos and advertising messages remain clear and highly visible during daytime use.

Installation benefits
In a roadside environment, communication needs to attract attention quickly and deliver its message effectively. Unlike a traditional static billboard, an LED display can show different images, animations, videos and advertising campaigns, allowing content to be updated without physically replacing the advertising medium.
The screen’s 6,000-nit brightness is particularly valuable for outdoor applications, helping content remain visible during the day and in bright ambient conditions. Its 6.6 mm pixel pitch is also well suited to medium- and long-distance viewing, making it an effective solution for roadside communication.
For the client, this provides a dynamic and flexible communication platform that can be used for different campaigns over time. Content can be changed and scheduled according to commercial requirements, enabling the same digital surface to support multiple messages and communication strategies.
The installation also benefits from features designed specifically for outdoor environments. The SIGNUM-FS range provides IP68 front and IP66 rear protection, together with a sealed die-cast aluminium module frame and waterproof connectors to help protect the display against external conditions.
Product used
The project uses a solution from the Macropix SIGNUM family, developed for fixed outdoor LED installations and suitable for applications including digital advertising.
A key feature of the product is its aluminium construction, designed to improve heat dissipation while reducing exposed components and cabling. Board-to-board “cableless” connections are used, while the data and power boxes feature IP66 protection. Common-cathode LED technology also contributes to lower energy consumption.
In practical terms, SIGNUM has been developed to combine visibility, durability and ease of maintenance—three important requirements for a display operating permanently outdoors. Its main features include:
- IP68 front and IP66 rear protection;
- refresh rate up to 3,840 Hz;
- declared operating temperature from -30°C to +65°C without heaters or forced ventilation;
- both front and rear maintenance access.
Front or rear access gives greater flexibility when planning maintenance according to the space available around the installation. The die-cast aluminium construction also helps create accurate module alignment and a uniform display surface.
