The installation carried out by Macropix at the University of Pavia consists of a curved LED display with an 1.8 mm pixel pitch, built across a total surface of 7680 x 3360 mm with a native resolution of 4128 x 1806 pixels. The wraparound configuration was designed to integrate with a robotics simulator, recreating a 360-degree visual environment that accompanies the user throughout the simulated experience.
The screen’s curvature eliminates the visual blind spots typical of flat installations, offering a continuous field of view that heightens the sense of presence and realism. The project stems from the university’s need for a cutting-edge tool for research, teaching and experimentation in robotics, where visual fidelity and display responsiveness are decisive factors for simulation quality.
Installation benefits
In a robotics research and simulation context, visual experience quality is not a cosmetic detail but a factor that directly affects the effectiveness of tests and the reliability of results. The curved screen installed in Pavia offers a continuous, uninterrupted field of view, eliminating the perspective distortions that would occur with flat or multi-screen surfaces.
The 1.8 mm pixel pitch ensures an extremely detailed image even at close range, a typical condition in a simulator where the operator sits just a few meters from the display. This translates into a more realistic perception of depth, speed and simulated trajectories, elements that are crucial for training robotic algorithms and testing complex scenarios.
The wraparound configuration also reduces visual fatigue during extended sessions, enabling longer, more accurate testing. For the university, this means having a state-of-the-art laboratory capable of attracting research projects, industrial partnerships and advanced training programs, positioning the institution among the most innovative centers in robotics simulation.
Product used
The technological heart of this installation is Flexilis, the product developed by Macropix specifically designed to cover curved surfaces and create displays with unconventional shapes. Unlike traditional LED panels, each Flexilis card can be bent up to 90 degrees, both inward and outward, making it possible to shape cylinders, waves, light rings or, as in this case, wraparound surfaces designed for immersiveness.
The internal structure is engineered to protect the electronic components even at the most pronounced curvatures: dedicated blocks limit the maximum bending angle, while a carefully studied curve line safeguards LEDs and circuits. The system is based on standard 960 x 480 mm modules, customizable to fit the specific needs of each project, with power supplies and signal boards integrated internally for a visually clean result, free of exposed cabling.
Completing the picture, GOB (Glue on Board) technology applies a transparent protective layer directly onto the LEDs, making the surface more resistant to impact, dust and moisture, and ensuring greater durability over time. In short, Flexilis combines creative freedom, visual quality and technical reliability, making it the ideal solution wherever display shape becomes an integral part of the project.
