1.5 mm COB LED screen at “La Sapienza” University in Rome

Macropix has created a highly innovative installation at La Sapienza University in Rome, introducing COB technology with Flip Chip architecture for the first time in an Italian university. The project was carried out in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Architecture and involved the installation of an IMAGINIS-JC series LED screen, the flagship model of the Macropix range, capable of offering high-definition images, high contrast, and vivid colors, while ensuring robustness, energy efficiency, and simplified maintenance. The installation was designed with mechanical and structural care to blend harmoniously into the historic setting of the Aula Magna. Thanks to this solution, the University benefits from more effective and professional visual communication, enhancing events, conferences, and presentations.

Installation details

A 1.5 mm pixel pitch LED wall of 2400 x 1350 mm has been installed in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Architecture of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome. For the first time, the new COB technology was applied in an Italian university which allows for sharper and more contrasted images as well as unparalleled product robustness. furthermore, the display can also be cleaned without risk of breakage.

The aim of the project was to transform the heart of university presentations and events into a space for advanced visual communication, capable of offering extraordinarily clear and engaging images. The main challenge was to integrate state-of-the-art technology into a historic and architecturally sensitive context, while ensuring high performance and a safe and durable installation.

To design an uncompromising visual experience, Macropix studied every aspect of the installation, from the size and resolution of the screen to the supporting structure. Each component was designed to ensure maximum reliability, perfect integration with the environment, and excellent visual performance.

  • Series: Imaginis-JC pitch 1.5
  • Technology: COB (Chip On Board), first application in an Italian university, with high-contrast images and superior definition
  • Display area: 2400 x 1350 mm
  • Resolution: 1536 x 864 px
  • Complete mechanical design for perfect integration into the environment
  • Static report and structural analysis to ensure safety and stability
  • Load-bearing wall structure specially designed to support the display
  • Side cover for protection and aesthetic finishing

Installation benefits

This project is far more than a technological upgrade; it’s a visual communication asset designed to elevate events, conferences, and academic presentations. Macropix has combined high performance, ease of use, and refined design to deliver an exceptional viewing experience, enhancing engagement and visual clarity for students, faculty, and guests.

  • Sharper, more detailed contents, ideal for presentations, conferences, and academic events
  • Higher contrast and improved color accuracy for more effective visual communication
  • Long-lasting durability thanks to COB technology, reducing maintenance and operating costs
  • Seamless integration with the Aula Magna’s architecture without compromising its aesthetic character
  • Stronger visual impact, enhancing the overall experience for attendees

Product used

IMAGINIS-JC represents the pinnacle of professional LED technology, featuring COB (Chip-on-Board) with Flip-Chip architecture. This combination ensures crisp, detailed imagery, outstanding reliability, extended lifespan, and superior energy efficiency compared to traditional LED modules. The result is a display that delivers exceptional visual performance—perfect for prestigious institutional and academic environments such as the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Architecture.

COB Flip Chip technology sets the IMAGINIS-JC series apart from all other Macropix products, especially in terms of robustness and advanced integration:

  • Enhanced reliability and protection: LED chips are mounted directly onto the substrate and encapsulated in epoxy resin, safeguarding components while improving light diffusion.
  • Flip-chip architecture: chips are mounted upside down, providing a wider emission area, lower energy consumption, and superior light performance.
  • Thermal stability and efficient heat dissipation: The structure minimizes thermal resistance, ensuring long lifespan and consistent color performance over time.

IMAGINIS-JC delivers exceptionally detailed images and high contrast, featuring a 10,000:1 ratio and 600 nits of brightness. With HDR compatibility and 16-bit processing, the display reproduces over 281 trillion colors, ensuring vivid, lifelike content. Its wide 170° viewing angle and advanced optical technology offer superior visual comfort, minimizing color shift and unwanted reflections.

The LED screen is designed for safe, extended use: it effectively filters diffuse light, reduces exposure to blue light, and protects users’ eyes, making every viewing session more comfortable.

IMAGINIS-JC combines lightness and practicality: with a 5 kg cabinet and a thickness of less than 70 mm, it allows for flexible installations and reduces energy costs (average consumption 125 W/m², maximum 250 W/m²). Front maintenance is easy thanks to magnets and wireless LED boards, while IP54/40, antistatic, and anti-collision protection ensures safety and reliability over time. In summary, IMAGINIS-JC combines exceptional visual performance, lightweight and efficient design, and advanced protection, offering a professional and long-lasting viewing experience, ideal for institutional installations and high-end environments.
